Troubleshooting failed uploads

What each upload error message means and how to fix it, for both spreadsheets and documents.

This article maps each upload error to its cause and the fix. Work through the section matching the message you saw.

Start here: the two fixes that solve most cases

  1. Re-save the file. Open it in Excel or Google Sheets and save it again as .xlsx. This resolves the most common spreadsheet upload failure, where the file's internal type is not what its extension claims — very common with CSVs exported from other software or downloaded from a browser.

  2. Check the header row. For bulk property upload, column headers must be in row 1, with Street Address, City, and State present. Delete any title or blank rows above them.

"Failed to check or sign comp sheet"

DealGround rejected the file before the upload started. Causes, most likely first:

  • The file's type is not recognised as CSV or XLSX, even though the extension looks right. Re-save it as .xlsx from Excel or Google Sheets and try again.

  • Your session expired. Refresh the page, sign in again, and retry.

"Failed to confirm comp sheet upload"

The file reached DealGround but could not be handed off for processing. Wait a minute and try again — this is usually transient. If it repeats, email [email protected] with the file name and the time you tried; this one needs us to look at it rather than something you can fix.

"Invalid file type. Please upload a CSV or XLSX spreadsheet."

The file is not a spreadsheet DealGround can read. Legacy .xls and macro-enabled .xlsm are not supported — re-save as .xlsx. Google Sheets must be downloaded as .xlsx or .csv first.

"Request failed with status code 403"

The upload took too long between starting and finishing, and the secure upload link expired. This happens on large files over slow connections. Retry on a stable connection, or split the file into smaller batches.

"Error uploading files, try again!" (brochures and documents)

A general failure somewhere in the upload. Try, in order:

  1. Retry with a single file rather than a batch, to isolate which file is the problem.

  2. Confirm the file is under 50 MB and in an accepted format (PDF, TXT, CSV, DOCX, XLSX).

  3. Refresh the page and sign in again in case your session expired.

"You can only upload up to 100 files at a time"

Files still uploading or processing count toward the limit. Wait for the current batch to finish, then upload the rest.

Files disappear when you drag them in

Files over the size limit are dropped silently rather than showing an error. If you drop ten files and only seven appear, check the sizes of the missing three.

The status says "Error" in the activity table

The file uploaded successfully but could not be processed. For spreadsheets, this is nearly always the header row or a missing required column. For PDFs, it usually means the document could not be read — scanned images with no text layer, or password-protected files.

The upload succeeded but nothing happened

  • No new list after a bulk upload? If you already have a list with exactly those properties, no duplicate is created. Also check the activity table for an Error row.

  • A document you uploaded before? DealGround recognises files it has already processed and links the existing copy instead of reprocessing. The document is available; it just was not processed a second time.

  • Something stuck in Processing? Large documents take time. Anything still processing after 24 hours is automatically marked as an error.

Still failing

Email [email protected] with the file name, the exact error message, and a screenshot. If you can, attach the file — most upload problems are diagnosable in a couple of minutes with the actual file in hand.
